Bowl of fresh tomato sauce served with a poached egg.

Simple Tomato Sauce

Homemade tomato sauce is easier than you think! This sauce can be used on pasta, chicken parmesan, spaghetti squash, or any vegetable. This is so easy and is one of my favorite recipes. You can add herbs, meat or cheese to change the flavor. You can keep this in a jar in the fridge for up to 4 days or freeze in batches to use later. You’ll always have fresh sauce without the added sodium!

INGREDIENTS

1 (28oz) can of good quality tomatoes
1 clove of garlic, halved
1 medium brown onion, halved
4 Tbsp unsalted butter (sub ghee or vegan butter)
Fresh cracked black pepper
JF Universal Salt, to taste

PROCESS

Step 1: In a large saucepan, crush the tomatoes with a large wooden spoon. Add the garlic, onion, butter, JF Universal Salt, and pepper. Bring to a boil.

Step 2: Reduce and simmer for 35-45 minutes. At this point, you can discard the onion and garlic or use an immersion blender and blend together for a more complex sauce. Try both ways and see what you prefer.
